Water in Comet C/2003 K4 (linear) with Spitzer
We present sensitive 5.5–7.6 μm spectra of comet C/2003 K4 (LINEAR) obtained on 16 July 2004 (rh = 1.760 AU, ∆Spitzer = 1.409 AU, phase angle 35.4 ) with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The ν2 vibrational band of water is detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio (∼ 50). Model fitting to the best spectrum yields a water ortho-to-para ratio of 2.47± 0.27, which corresponds to a spin temperature of...
متن کاملEthyl alcohol and sugar in comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy)
The presence of numerous complex organic molecules (COMs; defined as those containing six or more atoms) around protostars shows that star formation is accompanied by an increase of molecular complexity. These COMs may be part of the material from which planetesimals and, ultimately, planets formed. Comets represent some of the oldest and most primitive material in the solar system, including i...
متن کاملA polarization study of comet Hyakutake ( C / 1996 B 2 )
Observations for the linear polarization of comet Hyakutake (C/1996B2) are carriedout at three continuumwavebands: 3650Å, 4845Å and 6840Å. These observations were taken on March 13 and March 18, 1996 when the phase angles were 38.1 and 36.9, respectively. These results indicate an increase in the degree of polarizationwith phase angle andwavelength, in general. Present results show that comet H...
متن کاملDNA Damage in Leukocytes from Fanconi Anemia (FA) Patients and Heterozygotes Induced by Mitomycin C and Ionizing Radiation as Assessed by the Comet and Comet-FISH Assay
Background: Lymphocytes of Fanconi anemia (FA) show an increased sensitivity to the alkylating agents such as mitomycin C (MMC), but their responses to gamma-irradiation is controversial. The extent of DNA damage in leukocytes of FA patients following irradiation and MMC treatment was studied at cellular and single chromosome level. Methods: DNA damage induced by gamma-rays and MMC was measure...
متن کاملEnforcing Medical Licensing in Illinois: 1877-1890
Today, physicians are perhaps the most regulated professionals in the United States, but in 1870, almost all of them were unlicensed. In most jurisdictions, anyone could hang up a shingle and practice medicine. Only the Dakota Territory and Ohio required physicians to register with local authorities. Between 1870 and 1900, the practice of medicine changed dramatically, and by 1900, almost every...
